There is a misconception that in order to do art, or know about art, one must demonstrate a sense of artistic talent that surpasses the general understanding. My experience as an artist and an art historian has taught me that everyone is capable of having an artistic and creative side, without having to label themselves an expert or art enthusiast. An educator can be described as being the product of learning; as such, it is necessary to find modes that will encourage the next generation to pursue academia.
I believe that a teacher should provide the tools necessary to facilitate learning. Most importantly, I believe that when a student has a safe and positive environment, one where there is no fear of asking a question or raising a hand, original ideas are allowed to manifest. A safe environment is one of the most significant characteristics that can accompany a classroom. Safety induces a positive setting that will produce necessary respect between student and teacher, allowing for the accumulation in self-confidence and a growth in the belief of higher education. “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” In this quote, Pablo Picasso acknowledges the creativity that dwells within children. As an instructor, I want to create an interest in art, and use it as a methodology for acquiring knowledge to fuel a student’s area of strength, whether it is science, history, English, or math. My method of teaching is focused on a progressivistic and humanist approach that will allow students to use their own interests to further education. My ultimate goal is to have my students take the knowledge of art and use it beyond childhood. |
